We just got back from La Ceiba, Honduras! I had the opportunity to paint more murals (I also painted one last summer).

Stencil Resist and Underglaze Inlay on Leather-hard Clay

Materials: Post-it notes (or paper), sponge, towel, water, scissors, underglaze, wax resist, needle tool 1.) I cut all of my stencils from Post-it notes. The paper is thin and works really well for this! Put a towel down and wet the stencil with a clean sponge. 2.) Lay the stencil onto leather-hard clay. Go around the edge with your finger to make sure it's completely adhered to the clay. 3.) Brush a coat of underglaze onto the stencil. Let it dry and brush another coat on if needed. 4.) When the underglaze is completely dry, brush a coat of wax resist over it. 5.) When the wax is completely dry, use a needle tool to carve into the clay. 7.) Paint underglaze colors into the carvings. 8.) When the underglaze is dry, use a sponge to wipe the excess color away.

Trace a circle on the watercolor paper 2. Draw the stem: 4. Draw 8 lines that come from the stem and curve them down to the edge of the circle: 5. Cover every pencil line with glue and let it dry: 6. Outline around the glue with a thin sharpie: 7. Paint! We did wet on wet to blend the colors. I had the students paint one section at a time and add yellows, oranges and reds! 8. When the paint is dry, add some contour lines with sharpie by outlining interesting paint shapes.

Finding time to work on my pottery is tough. These damp boxes keep my pots leather hard for months at a time if needed! I used 50 pounds of plaster (about $18) and 2 plastic totes ($9 each) to make two damp boxes. This was enough for a 3'' slab of plaster in the bottom of my totes. I probably could have gotten away with half as much because the totes are sooo HEAVY now. You can add water as needed to the plaster to create a humid environment to keep your clay moist. Materials: plastic totes, water, pottery plaster, scale, drill to mix with 1.) Figure out how much water you need. For USG pottery plaster #1, the ration is 70 parts water to 100 parts plaster.
