This is an easy and attractive way to teach students about different watercolor techniques.
Materials: watercolor paper, permanent marker, rulers, watercolor paints, paintbrushes, plastic wrap, bubble wrap, salt, watercolor colored pencils, crayons, rubbing alcohol, tissues
I only give the students red, yellow, and blue paints and have them mix colors in pallets.
1.) Students created a landscape by drawing a horizon line (wavy, bumpy, zig-zag) a little bit above the center of the paper.
2.) Students traced a circle in the top half of their paper. Coming from the circle to the edge of the paper (or horizon line), they drew 4 straight lines with a ruler.
3.) The bottom half of the paper was divided into 7 sections with various types of lines.
4.) We used warm colors for the sky and these techniques: tissue blotting, white crayon clouds, variegated wash, gradated wash. Wet on wet was used in the sun.
5.) We used cool colors for the ground and these techniques: watercolor colored pencil, crayon resist, bubble wrap, plastic wrap, rubbing alcohol, salt, dry brush.
